Risk For Severe Storms Flooding Downpours To Be Renewed In The Plains This Week

Risk for severe storms, flooding downpours to be renewed in the Plains this week

Active pattern to unleash another round of severe weather after brief lull

Following a relatively quiet weekend, AccuWeather forecasters say severe weather will return to the central U.S. this week, bringing a renewed risk for large hail, damaging wind gusts, tornadoes and flash flooding. The greatest threats will focus on the southern and central Plains.

Monday's severe weather risks

A new storm system will develop over the southern Plains Monday and spread into the central Plains for Tuesday.Storms are most likely to erupt Monday afternoon and evening from central Texas to western Oklahoma and in the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles. Large hail, damaging wind and isolated tornadoes will be the main severe threats.

Flash flood risk to escalate Tuesday

As a cold front associated with the storm system slides southward, storms will develop ahead of it and produce heavy rain Tuesday. The greatest risk for flash flooding will extend from southeastern Nebraska to central and eastern Kansas and northern Oklahoma. The highest risk for flash flooding is anticipated to occur Tuesday night through Wednesday morning.

Severe weather to spread eastward later this week

Later this week, severe thunderstorms will shift their focus eastward and impact areas from the mid-Mississippi Valley to the southern Appalachians. While the risk of tornadoes may diminish, other hazards such as damaging winds, hail and flash flooding will remain elevated.
