Eukaryotic Cells: The Nucleus and Other Membrane-Bound Organelles
What is a Eukaryotic Cell?
Any cell or organism that possesses a clearly defined nucleus is a eukaryote. The eukaryotic cell has a nuclear membrane that surrounds and houses its DNA.
The Nucleus
The nucleus is the control center of the cell.
It is surrounded by a membrane that separates it from the rest of the cell contents.
Inside the nucleus, DNA is organized into chromosomes.
Other Membrane-Bound Organelles
Eukaryotic cells contain several other membrane-bound organelles, including:
- Mitochondria: The mitochondria are responsible for producing energy for the cell.
- Endoplasmic reticulum: The endoplasmic reticulum is a network of membranes that folds and transports proteins.
- Golgi apparatus: The Golgi apparatus is responsible for modifying and packaging proteins for export.
