What the International Criminal Court (ICC) Does
Investigating and Trying Individuals Charged with the Gravest Crimes
The International Criminal Court (ICC) is an independent, international tribunal that investigates and, where warranted, tries individuals charged with the gravest crimes of concern to the international community, namely genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes, and the crime of aggression.
Jurisdiction and Applicable Law
The ICC has jurisdiction over crimes committed on the territory of a state that is a party to the Rome Statute, the treaty that established the Court, or by a national of such a state. The Court can also exercise jurisdiction if a situation is referred to it by the United Nations Security Council.
The ICC applies the Rome Statute and the principles of international law when conducting its investigations and trials.
