Early Life and Success
WEB Horatio Gates Spafford was born on October 20, 1828, in Troy, New York. As a successful lawyer and devout Presbyterian church elder, he lived comfortably in Chicago with his wife and four young children.
The Great Chicago Fire
In 1871, the Great Chicago Fire devastated the city, including Spafford's home and law practice. Undeterred, he continued his legal work and became involved in various Christian organizations.
Loss and Heartbreak
In November 1880, a tragic event struck Spafford's life. While traveling to Europe, his ship was caught in a storm and sank. His wife and four daughters drowned, while Spafford survived alone.
The Hymn "It Is Well with My Soul"
Devastated by the loss, Spafford penned the lyrics for the hymn "It Is Well with My Soul." The hymn expresses his unwavering faith in God's sovereignty, even amidst immense suffering.
Later Life and Legacy
After the tragedy, Spafford moved to Jerusalem and dedicated his life to serving the poor and disadvantaged. He established several charitable organizations before passing away on September 25, 1888.
